The Usual

written by: OurSacredHonor

Tonight you drive
You always like to
Something about control
Passenger side
I stare at streetlights
The night makes this all feel so slow

Inside my mind
I'm trying to find
A conversation that will last
But just when I might
Have gotten the words right
It appears the moment has passed

So I just let you talk
As we both walk
Up to the diner doors
My life's no story to tell
And you entertain too well
For me to try and speak anymore

The menu's the same
Just our appetite's changed
Depending on our mood
I'll order the usual
And help you to choose too
Before getting back to figuring out you

While you were gone
I've started to catch on
To why you don't make much sense to me
It's got something to do
With how you
And I have such similar personalities

This table between us
Might as well be a mirror
Because I feel like I'm looking into me.
If the tables have turned,
They've turned upside down,
My reflection is all that I see

We get past "pass the ketchup"
And try our best to catch up
To a friendship that gets up and runs away
But like the salt we've used
To flavor our wounds
Still the taste of history will stay

Our excuses for leaving
Are like seasoning the seasons
After winter, spring will always follow suit
But the first day of spring
Doesn't change anything
A dead tree is still just as hollow to its roots

The answers we're seeking
Aren't found while we're speaking
But in the silence that occurs in between
All the stops and the starts
And the time we've spent apart
Still you know exactly what I mean
