The Mermaid's song
How did I get here?
Said the mermaid to the sun
She use to swim with the dolphins
In the glory of the dawn
How did I get here?
Chained to these walls
A prisoner
Calling home
Her tail almost gone
When did it happen?
Her life in shallow waters
When she use to swim the sea
The Ocean's sea-daughter
When did it happen?
Her gills loosing colour
Use to be bright green
Blending with the sea
Turning around
Tail swish out
Open up her arms
Let the night cry out
Her eyes search for the sky
For the days gone by
She feels the same freedom
Buried in her heart
The water slaps her slightly
Memories delight
The sea is calling
Who cares about those wanting
Breaking free from chains
Her gills bleed from the pain
The salt is bitter sweet
As the mermaid is set free
Swim in the night
Her colour brimming bright
Never to return
How did I get here?
Said the mermaid to the moon
I don't know little mermaid
You shouldn't have waited so long
Mermaid closes her eyes
Fearful of all life's lives
Opens them up bright
The moon her only judge
The sea is beckoning
Calling out her name
No longer a prisoner
She swims out once again
It's never to late mermaid
Come back home to the sea
Don't listen to the moon
This is where you should be
Splashing, laughing
Mermaid is gone
Dancing forever with the dolphins
(this poem was written shortly after the birth of my 5th son, when I felt overwelmed and exhausted. I wondered where I had disappeared, the girl (I always see me as a mermaid)I once was before I became "Mother". What I realized writing this poem is I was always still there, just buried in the confidements I put upon myself. Once I realized that, I was able to set myself free, and be both ME and mother without comprimising either one.)
