Trial of a Friendship

written by: OurSacredHonor

Ladies and gentleman of the jury
We are gathered here today to hear a story
It's about a boy and girl
Who destroyed each other's worlds
But let me warn you all from the beginning
That in the end neither side ends up winning
And another side note, this is not a fable
So let me lay it all on the table

It starts with a boy, distraught, thrown into a situation
Impatience, heart racing when he first saw her face and
Dying to meet her he went over and they talked for a while
The rest of the day his face wore a smile

As for that girl
She's from a different world
It's not that she grew up very far
More like she forgets the sun and revolves around another star
Distant and sheltered to protect her from her fears
She covers her eyes and mutes her ears
Hiding and confiding in her inner self
Thinking that there's nobody else

They get to know each other and they slowly become friends
Each enjoying their own journey, not knowing what's around the bend
But then his feelings start to grow and his feelings start to show
She doesn't know where to go
She wants to run because she doesn't know how to react
She doesn't realize all he'll see is her turning her back
So she runs away and he cuts her off in everyway
This leads to the emotional debauchery that we have today

This is what happens when friends can't just be friends
This is the story that no one knows how it ends
Go poll the jury and ask them what they think thus far
But if you ask me who is guilty I'd say we all are

She's naive and believes for all the wrong reasons
She seems so out of season
It's almost like she doesn't' belong
In herself, there's something wrong
But she hides it so well
That no one can tell
That what she shows to you and me
Isn't all that there is to see

As for him, he's confused, abused and left asking why
All alone at night he can't help but cry
Dreaming and wishing that things could get better
Trying to find the right words but he can't piece together the letters
Coherently, they disappear so easily before his eyes
It's like he's trapped under threatening skies
He can't break free from the storm that's brewing
And he doesn't quite know what exactly he's doing

The two of them fight it out
Day and night now
To try and work it out
Maybe make it right somehow
But neither seems too willing to sacrifice
Or be a part of one another's life
So they question each other on the stand
Making demands
Each coming back with a stronger cross-examination
Each one slowly losing their patience
Neither is the criminal but both are robbed
If you have to ask, the world did the job
They finally both got fed up with it all
It eventually led up to their falling out
Now you'll see the two of them out and about
Every so often they'll pass and not so much
Glance in the others direction
This persistent mutual rejection
Hurts them both more and more
And the wounds they stay fresh and open and sore
They get up, walk out, then slam the door
And every time that happens someone's heart hits the floor

A year or two later
While this trial
Was in recess
I confess
That they found her
Passed out on the tile
In a pile of vomit and bile
So defiled and vile
Someone dialed 911
She was the luckiest girl under the sun
She was so quick to give up everything she had here
All because she didn't want to deal with her fear
She didn't want to go and rile anyone up
She didn't want to reconcile, Shake hands and make up
She figured if she just crawled in her hole all day
All her problems would just melt away
But she bottled it up and kept it all inside
Til she swallowed that bottle as she swallowed her pride
They managed to save her that day
She tried to throw it all away
But one has to wonder what she learned
Or is she still too concerned
With avoiding confrontation
Hiding behind her fa?ade of elation
Oh what a ploy
Jerk us all around just like toys
But remember in the end who cares
Which friends were there
Maybe then you'll be more aware
Of all you have that's rare

This is what happens when friends can't just be friends
This is the story that no one knows how it ends
Go poll the jury and ask them what they think thus far
But if you ask me who is guilty I'd say we all are
