The Eighth

written by: Mike Basile

Scattered across the land below,

in all directions the wind may blow,

there are 7 Great Wonders of the World,

but before me now, another's unfurled.

The Great Pyramid of Giza currently stands,

the largest and longest on the sands.

The Hanging Gardens served as a gift,

for the queen to make recovery swift.

Zeus at Olympia was highly praised,

gleaming in gold for all its days.

The Temple of Artemis, white as a mare,

was a holy house, sacred for prayer.

The Tomb of Mausolus, meant to honor the dead,

later became an aesthetic triumph instead.

The Colossus of Rhodes, which looked over all,

towered above, 30 meters tall.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria, a great landmark,

would guide its men, on through the dark.

While these things certain hold majesty,

much more wondrous, you are, to me.

For surely when compared to the Pyramid,

longer standing in my heart, you did.

And surely you transcended the Garden's powers,

when you healed my soul in just mere hours.

And certainly you held more worth to me,

than all the gold that Zeus did see.

And indisputably, regarding the Temple of prayer,

you were ever more sacred to me by compare.

And unquestionably, when aside the Mausoleum you are,

you hold more beauty to me by far.

And undeniably, when next to Colossus you stand,

your height, to me, is far more grand.

And truthfully, when contrasted with Alexandria for light,

ever did you burn ten times as bright.

But contrary to the common belief,

the more I give the more I grieve.

For the more I try to understand you,

every door I open unlocks ten anew.

Like quicksand, Love, the more I fight,

the more my efforts become my blight.

I struggle to wrap my head around you,

while you make it clear that in vain I pursue.

For something so perfect, such as you,

cannot be attained by one such as me.

And so I watched as your wings flew,

far across the vast blue sea.

I feel my heart tear my chest through.

Never to love again, I decree.

Now all I have is one hope anew;

that no longer you'll be the 8th Wonder to me.
