Prisoner to Me

written by: Mike Basile

Something pushes down upon me,
external yet coming from within.
For it to relent, I pray and plea,
yet never does the pressure thin.
Weighing heavily upon my soul,
as would blame lay on the convicted,
it has begun to take its toll,
for my freedom is now restricted.
And as I beg to break, it pushes me in,
suffocating me within myself.
But oh how I long to erupt from this skin,
to take my life off this arid shelf.
But I'm trampled and sodden,
like the leaves of Fall.
And never among men,
shall I once more stand tall.
So, self-condemned, I sit in a cage
forever a prisoner, to be.
A victim of my own selfish rage,
I keep myself here, a prisoner to me.
