History

written by: OurSacredHonor

So this is what I get for all that I've given?
You say that it's OK, just blame the time in which we're living
I did just as I was told, I went to school
I got good grades, went to college too
Got my degree and a job, just like you told me to
Bought a house and got married, the fairy tale come true
Right?
Well not exactly
The world around me stumbled
And fell at my feet
Like a stray dog at my doorstep
Begging for scraps of meat
Looking to take the last thing I have to eat
And take the roof I put over my head
Leave me out on the street
Go ahead, look at me now
Like this is my problem to fix
As I recall though, it was you
That got us into all this
I watch the stocks now
As they skinny dip
No, not swim, but drown
Anorexic in an oil slick
It's pathetic
Like some sick trick
Where "get rich quick"
Went to "in deep shit"
Better tell that Mick
He just made my list
Let's get to steering this ship
Before we end up like the titanic

History has shown we are our own worst enemy
And if we don't change then we ensure our destiny
Evolve and move forward or lay idle and collapse
Make your move now, there's no looking back

This could've all been righted
If we'd only tried it
The last drop of oil in the engine's ignited
When decades ago we should've electrified it
But this dependency
On over seas
Has gotten me shackled
To my SUV
And now my country
And it's economy
Is crumbling before me
How did no one see?
Or was this all prophesized?
Was this in somebody's eyes?
Somebody who just never had the drive
Never saw the prize
Felt no need to arrive
And what could've been simple
Instead is a struggle to survive
So I guess it's my time
I'm stepping back out of line
Stepping out of my comfort zone
To take what's rightfully mine
And though you may try
To keep me silent
Remember you're the one
Always resorting to violence
So there surely can't be much harm in a verse
It's just a few words, some pronouns and verbs
I write this regardless, but if one person reads it
And makes a difference, then I have succeeded
I'm just throwing a rock at the ocean
To see where it lands
That rock alone is nothing
But if enough of us can
Wake up from this coma
And get our heads out of the sand
With enough rocks
We can build a dam
That can stop the flood
Give strength to the mud
Enough to get our footing
And finally do some good
Find a map and some direction
It's time for course correction
No more time for questions
Lest this be our last lesson

History has shown we are our own worst enemy
And if we don't change then we ensure our destiny
Evolve and move forward or lay idle and collapse
Make your move now, there's no looking back
