Are you the rusted spring
And I the burnt out batteries?
We'll never get anywhere
Without energy
Are you the crooked contacts
And I the broken switch?
"On" and "Off" don't make a difference
Over an open circuit
Are you the tungsten disconnect
And I the noble gas?
Hoping to provide a path
For your electricity to pass
When I turn you on you beam
Bright, and whites, and teeth
You're a light that wraps around me
Capturing me instantly
When I close my eyes the silhouette
That you cast still remains
I leave you places and when I return
You shine just the same
I feel lucky if by chance
You remember my name
While I could put on a blindfold
And draw the outline of your shape
I hope you're being honest
Because you know exactly what to say
To convince me that I still mean something
And that some things never change
You spend all your time in the dark
From a distance you look like a star
Or the headlights of oncoming cars
But a flashlight is what you are
I want to believe what you say is true
So these batteries and this bulb are new
It's less what you say and more what you do
So flashlight show me the proof
