Luna looked out of her bedroom window, watching quietly as butterflies flew from flower to flower of her homes' garden. She reached and plucked the head of a rose from one of the plants. Luna held it out, smiling as one of the beautiful insects landed on it. They were her friends… Her only friends, apart from Sarah and Dante, but she didn't see Dante that often and Sarah… Well, Sarah wasn't even real… Or was she? Luna didn't know. She spoke to Luna only, no one else seemed to hear her. Luna only ever saw her in mirrors… and she looked just like her. Sarah came and went as from her head, usually she came when Luna most needed her.
Soon Luna could hear heavy footsteps coming up the hall… Her Step Father! She quickly looked for a place to hide the rose, and on the way to her drawers, she dropped it. As her door opened and her step father came through she quickly put her foot on top of it. Her step father looked around then down at Luna, who had taken her usual defenseless position: Shoulders slumped, back slightly hunched (as if the weight of the world was on her shoulders), and her eyes down, nothing to show the slightest indication of challenge.
"Have you finished cleaning your room?" he asked and Luna nodded.
"Yes, daddy."
That's when he spotted the window.
He went to it and closed it. Then he turned to Luna. "I have the air conditioner on and you have your window open? What, do you think we shit out money?"
"No."
He raised his hand and Luna flinched, but it came down as a warning finger. "First and last time I tell you. Are we clear?"
"Crystal."
Finally, her stepfather left and Luna let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding as her door shut and her step father called out. "No breakfast," he said..
A whimper escaped Luna's lips. She was really hungry, especially since she hadn't eaten diner yesterday. Or lunch.
She sighed and lifted her foot from on top of the rose. It was crushed, much like her hopes and dreams. She lifted it off of the ground and began to straighten it when a butterfly that must have been trapped in her room landed on it.
"Maybe there is hope…" She whispered. Suddenly she smiled, and spoke to the butterfly. "We're going to my mom's friend's house today. That means a good lunch and… Dante." She smiled again, opening her window just a little to allow the insect out and then closed it. She tucked the crushed rose into her dresser and grabbed her book. Luna began to read, allowing her mind to slip from whatever reality was left for her to hold on to.
