"Get up!" reversed (kelly)

written by: babeestars

"Just leave me alone!" he shouted. The last few months had been different. He still hit me, when he was angry, but sometimes, just sometimes, we would talk. Things weren't great for him, and he was starting to realise I was hardly having an easy time. But he'd started drinking; he wasn't being bullied anymore, but was in with the wrong crowd. So he'd come home drunk. If I was awake he would hit me, accuse me of things, anything. And If I was asleep, he would make sure it wasn't for long. I tried staying out later than him, but that was harder than I first thought, mainly because I had nowhere to go for that long, and my mum kept calling me checking I was ok, and when was I coming back. I guess they didn't do that to Ryan. I put my hand on his shoulder. He spun round to face me, his cheeks red, his eyes bloodshot. He raised his hand above his head. I clenched my eyes shut, bracing myself for the blow. But it didn't come. I slowly opened my eyes to see him crumpled in a heap on the floor, his eyes closed and his face slowly draining of colour. "Ryan? What are you doing?" there was no response. "Ryan, get up." I started to panic, this was the wrong way round, it should be me on the floor. "Ryan!" I screamed I shook his shoulders violently. The house was empty, and for once, I felt completely alone. "Get up!" I sobbed. I grabbed the phone by the side of my bed and hurriedly dialled for an ambulance, something he's never done for me but probably should have, but this was hardly a time to hold a grudge. It was the first time he's come home drunk, and not hit me. I guess that's why I hadn't left when I got the chance, because he stunk of alcohol, but didn't hit me. And that wasn't right. "Ambulance please." The questions seemed never ending; I could see why he hadn't called before.
"Is he breathing?" the operator asked. Oh god, what if he wasn't"
"I don't know, how do I know" I asked starting to panic.
"Ok put your hand above their mouth." I moved my shaking hand to his face. "Can you feel him breathing?"
"yes," I said relieved.
After all the questions where finished I sat there, not knowing what to do, I should have asked. Well it was too late now. I racked my brain to try to remember things I'd learnt, p.s.e lessons or things I'd seen on TV. Roll him on his side! I pulled him gently, scared of hurting him, until he was on his side. I just sat and held him; maybe this was my opportunity to talk to him without fear.
"I'm sorry Ryan." I paused, "I'm sorry, for moving into your house, for my mum taking your dad away from you. I'm sorry, for making us a family." I heard banging on the door. I let go of him so he rolled back onto his back, I ran down the stairs as fast as I could, I was about to take the chain of the door when something stopped me, the person looked like they were all in black, paramedics didn't wear black? They thumped again, making me jump back. "Let me in!" they shouted, "Ryan, I know your there. You owe us, and if you can't give us what we want I'm sure your scummy sister can." I clenched my fists and backed towards the stairs. I went back upstairs grabbing my phone from beside Ryan. "What the fuck have you got into."
"police." I whispered,
"Pardon, please can you speak up," the operator asked.
"Police," I said louder. I waited for the buzz as I got put through. I explained everything to them, and they listened, I probably told them way too much, but they listened, and I guess that made me feel better. This time I could hear the sirens before the banging on the door started again. I ran down the stairs, my phone still in my hand. A scream escaped my lungs as my ankle twisted on the last slip causing me to fall to the floor. "Are you ok?" the letter flap opened and I could see a set of reassuring eyes. I nodded, but I couldn't stand, I couldn't walk. So I crawled, I crawled to the door, and pulled myself up, avoiding putting any weight on my left foot. I slipped the chain, and opened it. I stepped back putting too much pressure on my ankle, I slipped again, a sturdy hand grabbed my wrist pulling me back up into his arms. "Thanks," I whispered breathlessly. "No problem." He replied, I gazed into his eyes, and everything disappeared around me. A woman's voice cut into my thoughts, come on, get a move on." She opened the door fully to get the massive bag she was carrying through, and then closed it. "Where is he?" She asked. "Upstairs," I pointed towards his room. The man sat me down as she made her way up. "My names, Tim. What's yours" I opened my mouth. "Wait, let me guess. "Erm, ok." I looked at him confused; I guess he was just making conversation. "Kelly?" or trying to impress me. I grinned.
"you'd be stuffed if I told you my mum made the phone call." He went bright red. "It's alright though, she didn't, in fact she doesn't even know one's been called." He relaxed slightly.
"Tim, I need you up here." Her voice cut through my thoughts again.
"you'll be alright won't you?" he asked,
"please don't leave."
"I'll only be a minute, you'll be fine."
"what if they come back?"
"who?" he asked, "your parents?" a big hand thumped in the door again, I screamed. I hadn't meant to, but it had made me jump, and I thought it was the guy from before.
"shhh," he said, putting his arms round me in a reassuring hug.
"police, open up" came the voice from the other side.
"looks like someone's checking up on us." He said reaching for the door. The policeman on the other side immediately relaxed to see another man in uniform. "are you ok? He said looking to me. I nodded. "alright, what we got?" he asked Tim, coming into my house followed by another police officer.
"male, upstairs, not been up there myself yet, Sharon's up there. This is Kelly, sprained ankle." I was left with the first police officer, while my rescuer disappeared upstairs, to rescue someone else.

This was riveting! I couldn't read fast enough. I like how you threw in the flirtation amidst the pain and fear. That's what life is really... grabbing happiness where you can, and distraction. Kelly with a love interest?? She could use it!
