the letter (sarah)

written by: babeestars

I handed the envelope to her mum. "Can you give it to her for me?" she turned it over in her hands. It was plain white with Katie's name written neatly on the front. "Please?" she nodded. I was sure she knew about everything, what she'd said to me, what I'd said to her, and regretted every day. I smiled weakly, "thank you." I whispered before turning away.

(this should be italics)
"This came for you." Katie looked at it suspiciously, it seemed like the time her mum had written her a valentine card because she hadn't got one, or the birthday card she wrote from her uncle because he had forgotten. But there was no special occasion. She looked at it hesitantly before taking it. The handwriting on the front matched her own, and the name was hers. She didn't know what to say, so she didn't say anything. Katie sat down on her bed, her hands automatically opening the light envelope. She unfolded the piece of paper inside. A pastel green slip fell out into her lap. She left it there as she read the letter.
"I know what you said, I know you mean it, I know you don't want anything to do with me. I regret everything I said to you that night, I lied, I do need you, please understand that even if you don't need me. I got this for you, I'd been planning it long before everything happened, it was supposed to be a surprise, I wanted to make you proud. Please go. And then, if you never want to see me again I understand, if we never talk again I will learn to accept it. But please, please go." She knew who it was from without looking at the signature at the bottom. She brushed her fingers over it gently.
"Sarah x" a single tear shone beneath her eye. Katie picked the green slip from her legs and read the black bold print on it.
"THS dance show. 6:30-9:00
good to outstanding."
Good to outstanding was the school motto, she'd heard Sarah take the piss out of it many times, she'd seen her dance once, in the school musical, she had looked at that stage and could see herself looking back, she remembered every performance she'd done there and smiled to know that Sarah was going to be just like her. "Dance show." But could she really go? Could she really see her again? No, she told herself, "I have to move on, she can't drag me back like this." She chucked the letter and the ticket across her floor before grabbing her coat and leaving. "Katie?" her mum called after her, but she pretended not to hear. Katie didn't know where she was going until she got there. Red river, so many memories, she smiled remembering the happy times, then collapsed to the floor when she realised who they where all of. Sarah.
