My heart was racing, I could feel the music pounding through my feet. My head was dropped low my hands loosely by my side, Georgia and Aimee stood the same beside me. I could feel all eyes on us. I counted in my head, "one two three four five six seven eight." Our hands shot up in unison, staring straight out into all the lights as the music started to slow. I slowly dragged my foot round until I had completed a full circle, every move coming naturally. The hours of practice starting to pay off. My legs were shaking beneath me, threatening to give way with every jump, but I willed them on. The adrenaline running through my body. I had no time to think of anything else. And before I knew it, it was over. Me and Georgia where holding Aimee up, all her weight on our arms. And when the music stopped, the lights went out and the cheer went up, and then we finally put her down. My breathing deep and my face flushed. "We did it." I whispered. "I did it." They grinned at me.
"We did." They echoed.
We waited backstage for the results. Although it was a dance show it was more like a competition and there would be a winner and two runner ups.
The Head went on stage, his voice projecting out across the hall, we stood hand in hand, waiting. I wasn't just waiting for the results. I was waiting to find out if she'd come. There were 10 groups in all, couple younger but mostly older than us.
"In reverse order, third place, Anna and Sheryl." The crowd started clapping as the girls walked on stage to shake his hand and receive their envelope with their prize in.
"in second place," I held my breath. "Georgia, Aimee and Sarah."
"oh my god. I said breathlessly. Aimee started screaming and jumping up and down. Georgia dragged us both out on to the stage. We shook his hand and collected our envelopes. "wow." I breathed as we walked to the side.
"And in first place." there was a dramatic pause. "Talia, Sherry, Christine and Louise." Everyone was clapping; I couldn't see any faces because the lights were too bright. We knew they would win, partly because they were a lot older than us, but partly because they all did a lot of dance outside school.
Adrenaline was still pumping through my blood as I walked out of the back door, the strap of my bag hung across my chest. I laughed as Georgia shouted something from the door before saying another goodbye to me. And as I turned round to walk away again, I saw her. She was standing there. Her bag mirroring mine, her hair straightened round her shoulders. And with the adrenaline still flowing through me, I ran. I almost ran away, but instead I ran straight into her arms, and she held me.
"I am proud of you. I'm so proud." I pulled away, biting my lip, trying not to cry.
"So this is it?" I asked her, "is this goodbye, forever?" I don't think she had an answer.
"Because, if it is, then let me walk away, because I can't go through it all again." I turned away, and then turned back again. "I just wanted you to see," I took a deep breath, "who you made me." That was it, I turned again, and left, I walked away, and she let me, without saying a word, she let me. "goodbye," I whispered, "goodbye, forever."
