It was dark as I walked home, but the dull streets lamps managed to light the pavement. I walked slowly in no rush to get home. No one would be there anyway. My dad was out in some other country with work, and my mum had been on a course all day for her work. My emotions toying with my head, I quickened my pace, a sudden chill in the air. She'd turned up, yet she let me walk away, she had really let me go, I guess this meant I really had to let her go to. I had to move on. I had my head down, staring at my feet. My feet left the pavement as I crossed the road. There was a screech of brakes. "Sarah!" the car hit my legs forcing my to the ground. I hit my head hard, pain shooting through my neck. My eyes glazed over "Sarah!" I heard her footsteps as she ran towards me, I heard her calling my name, tears streamed down my face as my vision slowly cleared. I pushed myself up so I was sitting, pain throbbing through my left leg which had taken most of the impact. I could hear a man talking, he was calling an ambulance. "No," I said, "I'm fine, don't call them." But he didn't listen to me. Then she was in front of me. Her hands gripping my head firmly to stop movement. "Katie, let go, please let go." I sobbed.
"Shh," I reached up to pull her away but she didn't move.
"Let go of me." I pleaded. "Don't do this to me Katie."
"I can't let you move, Sarah."
"Stop it. I'm not just anybody you find in an RTC, you can't just treat me like everybody else, let me go, Katie let me go."
"I'm not letting you go anywhere." I tried to pull away but she was to strong, she was trained.
"I've called an ambulance," the man said. "Let me help, what can I do? Are you ok, I'm so sorry, I didn't see you." He babbled nervously.
"Katie, let me go!" mascara streaked my pale cheeks, "Katie." She looked me in the eyes but didn't say anything, and I could see, with every word she didn't say, she was hurting. And then she let go. She stood up, backing away from me, "what am I doing?" she murmured putting her head in her hands. She pulled her hair back from her face, taking another step back. Then she turned and walked away. And in that moment I knew exactly how she felt when I'd walked away from her, she'd turned up, and I was letting her walk away. I pulled myself up using the bonnet of the car which had stopped beside me. I was in agony but since when had that stopped me. "Katie!" I screamed. "Katie!" she stopped and turned back towards me, her eye lashes damp with tears. She just stood there staring at me, "you wouldn't walk away from family" I swallowed, She walked back towards me.
"But" she said to my face, "you're not my family." And once again I watched her walk away. Every breath I took was so painful I wanted to stop breathing. It wasn't just the pain that made me want to stop breathing
"Ask your mum!" I screamed down the road. "Ask your mum," I sobbed, my legs gave way leaving me crumpled in a heap on the floor. "Ask your mum," I whispered.
